The title of this photo comes from the Pat Benatar song Too Long A Soldier (Wide Awake in Dreamland Chrysalis Records, 1988). In it she sings:

"In the city of monuments
Among the flags of all governments
The order of battle
Is written in the shadows
Of a hard black line."


No one has ever (to my knowledge) said it publicly, but to me this can only be a reference to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial -- "The Wall" -- where the names of all those killed in action are inscribed in the order in which they fell.

If you have the chance, you should listen to the song. And you should make the chance to visit the monument.

And remember.
