Carmi picked one of my (two) favorite subjects for this week's Thematic Photographic: Animals. Which, to me, is virtually synonymous with "dogs" since most of my animalular experience has been of the canine variety. That's not to say that I don't like cats, birds, horses, fish, and all manner of other beasts. I just haven't spent as much time photographing them.

The first shot came from an event I worked with North Carolina Rottweiler Rescue. The Blockade Runners Flyball Team was doing a demonstration, and this little guy was demonstrating that to a flyball dog, it's all about the ball.

In the second shot, different event, different dog, different flyball team. This time it was the Go Dog Go group on display. and... what else do I really need to say?

The third shot is one of two posters I designed for NCRR. The dog's name is "Bronte" and he was suffering from some sort of upper respiratory distress that made him look even more pitiful than the usual dog just taken into rescue. Which made him the perfect candidate for this shot. The misspellings on his sign weren't intentional, but by the time anybody spotted them it was too late to fix them. So we did what I always do: "Tell 'em you did it on purpose".

And finally the last shot is the other poster of the pair. This girl's name is "Joy" which she certainly was. Joy's trademark was her "sit". If she didn't understand what your command meant, she'd just execute the one she knew couldn't go wrong: "sit".

One of the results of the mortgage crisis and the rising foreclosure rate is the increase in the number of pets that are being abandoned when families move into rentals or with extended family where the four-legged members aren't always welcome. Your posters put a face to this sad statistic.

The Go-Dog-Go picture is ... funny. The poor puppy looks drugged. *giggle*

Unfortunately, it didn't take a mortgage crisis for this to be an all-too common problem. Rescues take in the abandoned, the abused, the unwanted and the neglected by the thousands -- possibly hundreds of thousands -- every year... and there's always a shortage of everything except dogs.

And the Go Dog Go pooch kinda is drugged. He's high on flyball. No need to see him as the "poor puppy" -- he's having the time of his life!

Your pictures have an emotionally powerful quality to them that cuts to the core of why humans need to take better care of our furry friends. As soon as I read through your entry, I was brought back to the moment we brought our rescue dog home from a neglectful home.

It's all about empathy and accountability, and society seems to lack sufficient amounts of either. Maybe if more folks saw your work, that would change.

Thank you for adding a totally neat perspective to this week's Thematic Photographic. I love when my friends take us places we hadn't intended to go.

@Gord: The "homeless" poster was one I'd been contemplating for some time before we actually shot it. The other one wasn't a completely original concept -- I'd heard the "just a human" phrase before -- but when I saw the shot it connected to that caption perfectly.

@Carmi: That's the great thing about this meme. Everybody has a different spin on the prompt, so we all get to roll up for the Magical Mystery Tour every week. Somebody's taken me down a road I didn't consider every single week.

@Cherish: So that explains who my visitor from San Antonio was anyway. Welcome! Glad you liked the pooches. There will be more... many more. I have a ton of dog/puppy shots. And you have some killer kid shots on your blog!

i love how that dog is all attached to the leg lol i love the posters. i was just thinking about how my girls said that their dad wanted to get this dog from a pet store while they were visiting him, but it was $800. i guess my ex wants a purebred. but for me, the best dogs are the ones that come from the shelter. i would much rather save one of those than to worry about my status or the status of a pet. i'm up, btw. :)

The dog not letting go of the ball is classic!

I very much admire your work with the posters/rescue. Love that you included it with the theme.

We have a rescued kitty and we make frequent contributions of supplies to the place we got him from in hopes those "guys" will get adopted, too.

I love your dog photos, but your poster boys are outstanding. I came from Carmi's.

Your photos are beautiful and intense. I found myself thinking deeply about the plight of some of these animals.. things I really don't like to dwell on because there is just so much neglect out there - it can break your heart. I guess if we all do our bit in our corner of the world when and where we can - then it has to help some.
