Thematic Photographic 11: Poignant v.5.0

I'm not even sure why this photo struck me as poignant, but it did. Sadlack's is one of those places that's seen 'em come and seen 'em go. It wasn't always called Sadlack's, but there's been a sandwich/sub place in that building since I was a kid (and people, that was a long time ago!). It has seen dozens of classes of freshmen become dozens of classes of graduates at NC State University, and is probably as iconic in Raleigh as the University Bell Tower across the street. No matter how many fast-food chain sub shops open and close along this stretch of Hillsboro Street, Sadlack's will probably outlast all of them.edible latex panties girls rubber leather licking slick wet lesbian asian amateur milf horny housewives mother theresa

You did a really good job balancing the light. that's not easy to do, or at least that's what I've been led to believe.

So, what's Sadlack's specialty?

Tiff: Some of that came from tinkering with the white balance, and some of it I did in post production by desaturating the image by about a third. The result was that the colors weren't as vivid (saturated), but that's the effect I wanted for this shot. Sadlack's specializes in subs and sandwiches, and brings in live bands sometimes too. It's been a fixture on that corner of Hillsboro St. for as long as I can remember (which is a pretty darn long time!) It had another name back when I was a kid (I'm thinking when I was maybe 5 or 6) but it's always been a sub shop. I think it was even there when my dad went to State (Class of '51).

Some places are transcendant. This is one of them. Two Guys Pizza up the street a couple of blocks from where this was taken is like that too.

It's poignant in so many ways. Places that have seen it all seem to wear their history on their sleeve. You captured a glow, an atmosphere here that makes me want to stand off to the side and ache a little for what might have been.

I like to walk through places like this and let me mind wander, to think about the people that have come through here, the stories they'd tell and the lives they'd lead.

Life is poignant. This place is where life, in all its forms, happens. Ergo, the photo is poignant. Gorgeously shot and described...consider me moved. Again.

I liked it too (obviously), but I wasn't sure if I liked it because of the photo, or because I grew up with the place that's in it. I suppose both were a factor. so it's good to get feedback form people who didn't grow up here and therefore have no special attachment to the place.

I like the timeless feel of this shot. This could easily be from the 1950s. Well, maybe if her hair had a bit more curl to it.

mojo,

If I'm not at the New Sarum Diner you'll see me in places like Sadlack's.

I'd be the geezer in a baseball hat (my motorcycle helmet on the table) saying to someone nearby, "You should try the cheeseburger with brown beans next time. Enough nitrates for the whole month. Puts a curl in your hair."

(Good line, smarm. Now, try the beans.)

cheers,

gord h.

Smoofus: "Timeless" is a good word to describe the place. "Ageless" might be another. And I'm sure in the 50's this same scene played out on this same porch. Just with a little more curl in the hair.
Gord: You're likely to find just about anybody on this porch. Mostly college students, but Hillsboro St takes you right into the heart of downtown Raleigh with all that that implies. This is "Old Raleigh". I vaguely remember...
