Ruby Tuesday (#3) and Wordless Wednesday #17 (Tuesday Edition): Back to School

"Hillsborough Street by Night"
Raleigh, NC - August 2008 (Click to embiggen)

Ruby Tuesday - Are you red-dy? Wordless Wednesday - Button Image by Smarmoofus

This shot is from a couple of weeks ago just before the return of the students of NC State University. Before it became a bookstore, the space occupied by Hillsborough Street Textbooks was a movie theater, and then a McDonald's. The red awning in the background belongs to Global Village Coffee house, specializing in organically grown fair trade coffees and is on my List Of Places You Gotta Visit When You Come To Raleigh. In between the two on the second floor is another time-honored establishment, Mitch's Tavern. Mitch's is owned by my old high school chemistry teacher, and was used for the bar scene in the movie Bull Durham (where Kevin Costner first meets Tim Robbins). I should never have a problem finding subjects for Ruby Tuesday in this part of town since the NCSU Wolfpack's team colors are red and white, and the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes sport red, white and black. Yes folks, there's red in abundance in Raleigh, NC.

Dear Mojo,
Being a night owl and a book-aholic I liked the mood of the street and also the facade of the bookstore.
A place I'd like to visit.

Our kids' college bookstore is 'modern', which could be a term for 'sterile'. New is functional...

Plenty of red in the RDU area, for sure!

Wow! I really like the ruby glow in this shot!

Mojo, both our kids go to the University of Hartford, with colors of RED and White! I wonder how wild the rivalries must be in your area - NCSU, UNC, Duke, Wake... hoops anyone??

Used to see the Carolina Hurricanes as the Hartford Whalers decades ago - nice memories, although the old team colors were then green and white...

Ralph: You still see quite a few Whale sweaters in the stands even now, but a couple of conference titles and a Stanley cup have pretty well solidified the red, white and black. Glen Wesley's #2 will be hung in the rafters this February. He was the last of the Whalers still left on the roster. But they're giving Jeff O'Neill a tryout in camp this year, to see if he can make it all the way back. Which to me makes no sense since we're already stacked in all three forward positions and just traded away one of the league's better young power forwards to bolster the defense corps. Makes one wonder sometimes...

Oh, and I realize that in this area it's right on the verge of blasphemy to say it, but I subscribe to the theory that basketball would be better if it was hockey.

Nice clean night shot. Mine are never so good, but then again, I never seem to have a tripod with me to hold it still!

What a nifty looking bookstore. How often do they change the marquee?

Tink: That wasn't shot on a tripod, just with a really fast lens (f/1.8) I was actually sitting in my truck waiting for the guy whose third brake light is glaring at you to try parallel parking. What's really remarkable is that the shot came out so clean despite being shot through my nasty windshield.

BNS: I don't go by there regularly, so I really don't know how often they change the marquee. I'd guess at minimum at the beginning and end of each semester when it's time to wheel and deal in books, but probably more often than that.

Red, indeed! The whole area is lit up with red.

Jams: Yep... and a record store, a bowling alley, and one of the better pizza joints in town are within a block of this shot. Plus a host of other eateries catering to almost any taste (pizza, subs and wings being the predominant breeds). If you can find a place to park or can walk, Hillsborough Street has something for ya. Even if you're a geezer like me.

ECL: I don't have to paint this part of town... it's already red!

Sue: The bookstore was a movie house in a former life.

I love night shots! This one is so dreamy and sensual.

The world needs more neon... but I'm a bit biased in that respect.

Hey Mojo, this is a great little place. I don't know if Jim would walk with me there or not.
Yes, I could play with Tonka as long as I didn't have to pose for HN Thurs.
..
Thanks for your nice compliment this morning. Some say I'm photogenic. :-)

Great photo. :D

I live in a college town, too, Chico, CA, home of CSUC. The first place I notice the students is usually Target. They buy large amounts of plastics - bins, hangers, garbage cans, laundry baskets.....

Sounds like a great spot to visit and hang out.

(.... a district full of red lights?)

-ahem-

Yeah, really looks like a cool place... and I love the fact that what was once entertainment is now educational. Sweet!

reminds a bit of the Hillsboro village area in Nashville. I love night photography and this is a great example.

Mojo said...

Kay: It's not that kind of red light district. (That's further down the street nearer downtown.)

What a cool bookstore! I love when old buildings take on new uses.

Great night shot. They can be a challenge sometimes, but you succeeded very well. Love the red light. Almost like in an old movie or something.

It is fun to visit someone's blog from my hometown. I grew up in the Five points area of Raleigh. I'm still in the triangle area although not in the part where I grew up. Good shot for WW and Ruby Tuesday.

That is awesome! I can't believe it was a candid shot through your windshield.

Great picture. Your shot capture a moment of the past and the future.

Hi Dianne, I like your red sign. Now I will have to see if our GameStop sign is red. Of course it won't be as pretty as yours.
I do think we have the same sky down here. Except, did you notice the sky over me in today's RR post? There wasn't a cloud in the sky.

Thanks for your nice compliment this tonight. Some say I'm photogenic. :-)

All that RED! I just love this photo Mojo! I have to say, I have always said that when I fly at night over Raliegh Durham it takes my breath away. It is just the prettiest city to look at from above! It twinkles everywhere. I see the city itself has some beautiful sights also. Great shot for Ruby Tuesday! :-)

Blessings,
Kimmie

Haunting photo today … I’m almost wordless at Sacred Ruminations this morning … haven’t decided WHAT to do at Small Reflections just yet … but today I’m trying to ‘catch up’ from being away from home all day yesterday.
Hugs and blessings,
