That's My World Tuesday #16: Yates Mill Pond

"Mill pond at Yates Mill"
Raleigh, NC - December 2008 (Click to embiggen)

Be a virtual tour guide on That's My World Tuesday

The deck (or pier or whatever they call it) you see here is normally used as an observation point to gaze upon the restored mill that's just out of view to your right. But since I was too tight on time to make the 2 mile hike around the mill pond to get to it, I decided I'd turn the tables and shoot the observation deck from the mill rather than the other way around.

The pond is the mill pond of the historic Yates Mill I've featured in several posts here. Apparently back in the earliest days of America's post-Revolutionary history, mills like this one dotted the landscape around what would become Raleigh in the 1790's. Of the ones known to have existed inside what are now the city limits, Yates Mill is probably the best known -- and best preserved. Though it is no longer a working mill all of the apparatus are, I believe, still in working order. So should some post-apocalyptic EMP strike Raleigh, we would still have a source of flour and corn meal.

Very peaceful! It's wonderful that they've preserved it and kept the equipment in working order, but I certainly hope there is never any apocalyptic need to use it again!

I loved the post-apocaliptic line!
And good to know. :) One more reason to move out to NC.

It's beautiful. And I'm glad I know where I can go for corn meal and flour if an EMP destroys our nation's electricity!

How cool that it could still be used if need be.

The mill is in a cool picnic spot. The interiors are open to public?

It's really good that this mill has been preserved so that the next generation will be able to appreciate the past. my WS entry is here.. http://maritestravels.blogspot.com/2009/02/my-world9-museo-dabawenyo.html

My comment at Ramsey Daily: "Nice one. My two sons put up an antenna for me this past summer - it transmits the HD signal and of course is free. And, we for one, would dearly miss PBS. I would say 90% of our viewing is of PBS programming and all worthwhile. (Sorry, Mojo.)"
