This week Thematic Photographic takes a look at "Drab", which is something I usualyl try to avoid in my photography. Usually when I get "drab" it's a mistake, and the photo will never see the light of day. So the challenge then becomes to make something drab appealing. A pretty good trick when you consider that the definition of the word is "dull; cheerless; lacking in spirit, brightness, etc.". Oh yeah, makes me want to just rush out and buy me some of that, how about you?

This, you may recognize as the North Carolina State Capitol building. It's a grand old dame, Greek Revival style (I'm told), but in this setting even the grandest of dames starts to look a bit down at heel. It was a grim, miserable day just slushy and icy enough to make things nice and sketchy without being bad enough to cripple the city's infrastructure so we wouldn't feel guilty for taking the day off. That kind of day turns everything drab.Violence Unsilenced

That may be drab to you but it's not drab to me. :-) I think it's pretty intersting and I love the white trees lining the street.

I am so ready for spring.
If there wasn't a couple of traffic barriers in that photo, there'd be no color at all. (;

I like this photo VERY much. I believe it fits drab perfectly for the reasons of the weather AND the fact that the "thickness" of the atmosphere make it nearly disappear and pretty much totally colorless.

Awesome! I wish I took such lovely photos. Amateur, me.

p.s. To go to my blog (which I made private due to challenges) please just e mail me at WendyOhW@yahoo.com and I will send you an invite. (I need your e mail address to send the invitation).

drab? maybe the lack of colour, but certainly not drab in emotion. just look at the fog hovering in the distance, the stark contract of road work tape, the ice on the trees... nope, not drab at all. well done!

It might be a drab day (btw. a new word I just learned), but the pic sure isn't.
Well done!

Hey Mojo! It may be drab, but the snow on the tree branches brightens up the photo & I think it's pretty!

I have a question for you - Do you know what site I can go to to make a photo I have into the background pic on my blog? I've tried googling "background generator", but I think those are just for myspace pages, cuz they didn't work on my blog. I'm guessing I'd have to turn the photo into a code in order to apply it to my blog, but if that isn't right... then I'm really lost! I'd appreciate your help if you know how! Thanks!

Brrr....it feels chilled. Drab, maybe not, because of the brightness, but definitely a chill, a hush and an unwelcomeness....
cool!

LOL - "makes me want to just rush out and buy me some of that"

The one thing that makes this photo 'drab' for me is the construction clutter on the right hand side.
I've GOT to find myself a drab photo...I think I've been too narrow in my perimeters.
