55 Flash Fiction Friday #55: "Fifty-Five, Squared"

3025 words committed to 55 Flash Fiction. Not counting the introductions and footnotes, obviously. There should be cake. Or something.
The ticket agent was sympathetic. But the fare was $89. She couldn't change that, "You understand." The young woman swallowed her tears and walked away.

He found her outside. "You forgot this", he said.

The red white and blue envelope. Her ticket home.

"Thank..." she began, then realized she was talking only to the night.

M6Friday: 55FlashFiction Graciously hosted by G-Man.

I moved far away with a woman. It didn't work out and she was taking a train home. She had enough for the ticket, but no money left for the three day journey. We were still on good terms but she was too proud to take any, or didn't want to take any from me. So when she wasnt looking, I stuck a fifty in the top compartment of her purse and shoved a couple of twenties in further. She found the fifty, and I denied any knowledge. I told her she must have forgotten it was there.
We were still friends years later.
