"I love you.""But…""No. That's the wrong conjunction. 'But' can never follow 'I love you'. It can precede it, but never follow it. Not if the love is real. The unconditional sort of love.""So what conjunction does follow a real 'I love you' then?""'And' works.""But not 'but'?""No. There are rules."

Constructive criticism and suggestions are always welcome. Respectfully stated differences of opinion are equally welcome. Love feeds are, of course, graciously accepted at any time.
Spammers, hate-mongers, and those who place other people in compromising or dangerous positions... comment at your peril. I have a zero-tolerance policy for such.
There certainly are .. and the 'but' cannot be implied by a pause either
ReplyDeleteThis is a familiar discussion. I must have had this with somebody before. It's a good rule of thumb, if we could censor the "But" issue.
ReplyDeleteMy mom, in her infinite wisdom, always says that the word 'but' negates everything that precedes it. Completely.
ReplyDeleteIn this case, 'I love you' should always be considered a complete sentence that stands on its own subject and predicate with absolute certainty.
Beautifully stated, Mojo. Rules are rules, by golly!
I suppose the speaker of the "but" must feel chastened. Or perhaps unreal.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great timely piece. Indeed, love has rules! I'll be up by 7:00 P.M.
ReplyDeleteTrue, there are rules...& love cannot be set in portions either...
ReplyDeleteyeah, but...
ReplyDeleteVery wise 55 Mojo. Good rules. No if's, ands or buts!
I heard the same thing Titanium did - say 'but' erases everything previously said. My 55 is HERE.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I've seen people trying to use arguments like that before, and you are right, there are no 'buts' with unconditional love.
ReplyDeleteMy 55 is HERE

Indeed there are rules...and you have found a most important one here. I think "however" would also be a no-no. As Brian suggests...leave it at "I love you"...simple and real.
