Monochrome Monday #31: Lakeside Jazz
One thing Raleigh has going for it -- if you know where to look -- is lots of free live music. At least during the summer months when outdoor performances are common. This show wasn't free, but the cost was negligible and for a couple of dollars you could enjoy an evening of jazz lakeside on the deck at Lake Johnson Park. This particular night the entertainment was provided by Susan Reeves, a tiny woman with a big voice. She'd just assembled her own ensemble that summer, and promptly lost her piano player to a teaching gig out west once the fall semester began. This was his final performance with the quartet. This is bassist Ben Palmer, who also plays with the Raleigh Jazz Orchestra as well as his own small band. For a time at least, he was also hosting an open mic night at Francesca's, a cafe in Durham. Busy guy.

Such a classic shot. Brilliant!
Very nice photo. Sounds like a great time too.
nice photo
Sounds great! We have some around here, I should get out and enjoy them. :)
Nice portrait, works well in monochrome.
Totally fabulous monochrome. You represent NC well. Acoustic music has been a large part of our history. Great photo!!!!
I had to look thrice! At first I thought that he was wearing a really funny hat.... that the top of his instrument was actually part of his headgear:)
I wonder if he was as amusing as bassists frequently are.
Excellent subject for a monochrome. Well done!

this looks like something from year gone by...
Wonderful subject for mono.
Perfect composition .. excellent monochrome
It's always been amazing to me how musicians are so involved with their craft. I suppose many of them must be because of money, but usually it's quite obvious that they highly enjoy their profession.
Re:Re: latest musical post - Those lockers must be huge and definitely preferable to keeping a bass in a small dorm room. I lived with a violinist for a year, and between his music stand, instrument case, and other related stuff, there wasn't much room left to maneuver. A full string bass in a 150 square foot dorm room? Unimaginable.
Now this also sounds like my kind of place- Free Music, and this time a great example of an image that is a born mono. You're very intuitive.
