Thematic Photographic 53: "Road" v.2.0

"Southern Approach"

This road is the one that everybody outside of Raleigh associates with the city, because when people from outside Raleigh see a view of the city, this is the one they usually see. The approach on South Saunders Street from south of town. I've never understood why this was considered the "iconic" shot, but apparently someone thought so at some point and it caught on. The most likely reason I can think of is that it affords a pretty comprehensive look at the downtown "backbone" where all the shiny tall buildings live.

I also find myself wondering why every city's so-called iconic shot needs to be a certain perspective of the skyline. Why is that? And who decides these things?

Frankly, I find myself more intrigued by the way you've framed it with the forlornly lit overpass and road. It may not be iconic in the postcard-kitsch sense of the word, but it's a far better photographic statement. Nice twist!
