Sepia Scenes #41: Blake Street, City Market
Blake Street is barely a street at all. It's not much wider than an alley, and scarcely half a block long. But on any given night of the week it's alive with people patronizing its various restaurants and pubs. An amazing number of these have been packed into City Market, and quite a number of those have a Blake Street address.
On the inside of this brick wall is the original City Market which opened in October of 1914 and served as a general farmer's market until the 1950's The opening of the new Farmer's Market in 1957 along with the advent of supermarkets, pretty well put paid to the old market and in 1959 it was sold to a private concern who leased it to a furniture store. In 1980 the City Council and the State Division of Archives and History secured a listing for the market in the National Register of Historic Places. But some things never change. Only moments after I took this shot, the fellow you see in the background hit me up for some spare change.

I absolutely love this photo. Wonderful!
Nice. Best use of sepia I have seen in a long time!
Beautiful capture - the sepia-tone compliments this scene so well.
Great picture. Reminds me very much of an area at the Presidio in San Francisco.
That was a good photo for seipa, I almost could picture me horses standing there instead of cars.
I actually agree with Ulrica.
I can picture me horses instead of the cars too..
Probably because of the sepiatoning.
Great shot that's for sure!
Nice to see this old part of town. So did you give him some change? ;-)
Nice, I like the perspective you get with the road.
It is great going to a farmer's market later in the summer. The tomatoes are ripe, the ears of corn delicious, the zucchini and squash ready for grilling and the plumpest sweet blueberries. It might a bit of a transitional area to some, but as this place fills up with people, it is a great place to gather!
I bet you didn't see it coming!!
So? Any loose change for that fellow?
Thanks for the help :)
Something becomes nothing becomes something again.
As usual a wonderful shot. So did you spare a dime? LOL.
