Thematic Photographic 63: "Summer" - v.5.0 "Nature's Sandbags"
Just a few minutes after I got my "obligatory footptints-on-beach shot" from a couple of days ago, this whimsical looking collection of curves and lines caught my eye. It only looks whimsical though. The dunes on the islands are serious business, as evidenced by the $500 penalty for ignoring the ubiquitous "Stay Off The Dunes" warnings posted at close intervals all along the length of the island. It's the same on all of the barrier islands in North Carolina. The dunes are the only shelter these low-lying sand bars have in the event of heavy weather. And sometimes they're not enough, despite the best efforts. After Hurricane Floyd in 1999, Onslow and New Hanover Counties spent millions rebuilding these natural seawalls and the beaches below them.
