They're only around for a few days or weeks, even if they're not cut. But for reasons as varied as the flowers themselves, we love 'em. We must. Because we take pictures of them all the time. We send them, carefully packaged to those we care about. We take them to our sick, and leave them for our dead. And when they fade and wither -- as they do -- sometimes we try to preserve them in repose, pressing them in books or drying them. Trying to immortalize the mortal, to make permanent the temporary.

Amazing! On the way across Broadway last nite I stopped to take a photo of a bench these very same flowers were peeking through
