Thematic Photographic 69 "Transition" v.6.0 - St. Agnes Hospital Restoration
When St. Agnes Hospital opened its doors in 1896 as a part of Saint Augustine's College, it became the only health-care facility for blacks between Washington and New Orleans. Severely damaged by fire in 1926, the hospital and the nursing school it housed continuerd to operate until 1961. The building has sat empty for nearly 50 years now, but is currently undergoing a $13 million renovation to rebuild it and put it back into use, but not as a medical facility. The transition was a long time in the making, but when it's complete it will represent a monument to another transition. It's hard to believe that it took until 1961 for health care facilities to be integrated here. If only barely, this transition took place in my lifetime. This? Is disturbing.Your Turn: Got a photo to support the "Transition" theme? Feel free to share a link in the comments. If you're new to Thematic Photographic or just wondering how this works, you can find out all about it here or better yet, here at TP's usual home. Tune in tomorrow for another installment in the Transition theme. Until then, peace yo!
