Thematic Photographic 83: "What I Did On My Vacation" v.3.0 - Circle of Life
I've never managed to find one of these intact on the beach. Rare enough that I see this much of one all in one place actually. So I'm guessing this one was still in one piece not so very long before I came across it. I should probably look these guys up and find out what kind of creature it is that constructs them. This is sort of the oceanic version of "dust to dust" I guess. the Sand dollar is reduced back to sand, the pieces intermingled with others and a new sand dollar emerges. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Just like it's always been.

I've never found one intact, either. What's up with that?? :)

It's sad. In fact when I do get to the beach, I'm amazed at the total lack of shells and stuff there are on the beach. I'm sure when I was a kid there were way more.
Never seen one in person .. so color me impressed you got that much of one!
I have often felt that way. I have come to expect feeling that way. But I have come to realize life is what it is. We break. And the sun sets in the West.
What a sad and lovely picture!
That is such a melancholy shot.
I have an intact one used as a X-Mas ornament - someone in my family found it on Myrtle Beach many moons ago and tied a red ribbon around a hole in the top to turn it into the ornament. A real treasure.
Is it a sand dollar? I just saw on someone else's blog (Hootin Annie's I think?) what a pain it is to preserve them, they're apparently super fragile.
Hit return too fast - I forgot to say that even in pieces it's a great shot - I love how crisp and tactile it is.
O yes.... I do.
