Hesitation
Between there and here, a river runs
Too wide to jump, too swift to swim
Hiding rocks and snares
And the detritus of a thousand wrecks
The bridge across is narrow
And none too sturdy
You hesitate,
Not knowing if it will bear your weight
And hope I understand.
I have seen the wonders on this side
The beauty of a landscape of believing,
In simple things
I want to say "It's alright, take my hand.
Don't look down, just follow me.
I know the way."
I hesitate,
Not sure the words will come out right
And hope you understand.
But you will cross or not
In your own time,
On your own terms,
And in your own place, as it must be.
As it was for me,
As it is for us all.
We hesitate,
All of us for our own reasons
That only we understand.

Enjoyed "Hesitation" greatly, though "enjoy" is probably the wrong word. Let me say I found great insight in the poem --- it made me think. A lot!
I've added "Why? What have you heard" to the Cosmic Rapture blogroll (left hand column, udner heading of "other domains". Hope you will do the same.

Love your exploration of all the personal nuances wrapped up in the concept of hesitation! Lovely poem!
Great metaphor, and linking end-line to each stanza.
Life remains to be laced with much hesitation, but that is life, it's never perfect, never a bed of roses...
But in those moments of hesitation, we could see some beauty and some challenges that will make life more worth living!
Awesome poem, this is! Loved it!
I guess all of us have to make our own decision on when to go or not. All we ask is some understanding. I enjoyed your thoughts and also the organization of the thoughts.
Mythological, that river. It has claimed so many. A worthy place, somehow, even if the other side is so much better. The effort must be in the going forward, not the thinking too hard about not going forward (she tells herself).
I loved this.
I just have one word...wow!!simple and profound!!
What a wonderfully profound poem...yes, we all must cross that bridge in our own time. Your words touched me deeply. Beautiful!
Great poem and one that really resonates with me right now. Thanks for sharing this jewel.
I love the consistency of the metaphor and you picked the perfect picture to go along. Also, I loved the universal theme in this poem.
I had an interesting discussion about this with a colleague last week. He said we need to stop ourselves from being so attached to what was, and instead be more willing to discard it all as we embrace what will be.
He didn't say it anywhere near as eloquently as this. Count on you to use multiple media to tell the story we all need to personalize.
I like this a lot....!
Superb. The depth and layers of this piece are truly wonderful.
phew
This is wonderful. I felt so many things on so many levels with your poem. This is simply outstanding.
I like it that the characters do not have to cross over.
how enlightening to let go... the best line for me.."..The beauty of a landscape of believing.."...
very well put, I think of hesitation it as something to remind us we are all too human and in that moment of hesitation, there is a panic but even if we don't express it
a truly beautiful poem and image~
I can really relate to this, wonderful poem.
What a beautiful metaphor, crafted with such patience and acceptance.
