sky watch friday #74: my end of the sky
My End of the Sky
Are the stars different
At your end of the sky?
Does the moon come closer to you
Than to me?
Are we so far apart
That the very skies themselves
Take a different form?
I hope, at your end of the sky,
The days are warm,
The evenings cool and fragrant
Brimming with promise
I hope, at your end of the sky,
You are smiling
Living
Loving
Happy

Especially in those early morning hours just after midnight on a totally cloudless night. And most especially when I realize that wherever we are, we're all gazing at the same moon. Thematic Photographic 57: "Distant" v.1.0
This week, Thematic Photographic looks off... to a "Distant" subject. How does 240,000 miles grab ya for "Distant"? This shot is unique in that it's one of the first I took with my new 2x teleconverter. Twisted onto my 200mm f/2.8L it gives me a 400mm f/5.6 for about 25% of the cost of buying an actual 400mm f/5.6 lens. It also weighs in at under 10 ounces, versus 2.8 pounds for the 400mm lens. And frankly, if I'm gonna lay out the cake for a 400mm lens, I'll go the rest of the way and get the f/2.8L IS. (And as soon as I have a spare $6800 lying around, I'll do just that. And then I'll have an 800mm f/5.6 for just over half of the $11,000 it would cost me to buy that lens.)

Thematic Photographic 56: "Aviation" v.7.0
Since I'm finishing up the week with Aviation "firsts" it seems only fitting to close things out with the first time a human footprint was left on a naturally occurring celestial body other than Earth. This is (obviously) a replica of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Module that carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the surface of the moon. (The third member of the crew, Michael Collins, drew the short straw and remained in lunar orbit aboard Command Module.) While there is known recording to back him up, Neil Armstrong solemnly swears that what he actually said as he put that first bootprint on the lunar surface was: "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." All of the recorded versions leave out the article "a", but the quote makes much more sense with it in there. So I'm going to take Neil's word for it.
Even though I didn't hear it that way at the time.

Sky Watch Friday #14: Deja Voodoo

Day or night, there's something about the moon that I can't resist photographing. But I've never quite figured out the geometry that makes the moon show up during the day in any phase other than full.
Deja Vu Alert: In case you were wondering, no this isn't the same shot I posted for Blue Monday this week. That shot was taken at Atlantic Beach back in late October. This one was taken at Theyland Stables here in Raleigh in mid-November. And when I scheduled these I didn't realize I'd scheduled them to appear in the same week!
Guess I really am a lunar-tic, huh?

Thematic Photographic 27: "Shadow" v.1.0 - "Waxing Crescent"
When Carmi first announced the "Shadow" theme for this week, I got really excited about it. Trouble was, I hadn't had time to execute any of the brilliant shadow shots I'd envisioned yet, so I was left scrambling in the archives. I found several examples, but none that really excited me. Until I remembered one of the largest shadows around, which I'd photographed only a couple of nights ago.I'd gone out with the intention of getting the crescent moon in the company of Venus and Jupiter. I'd seen them hanging out together the night before and thought they made a striking display, but -- as so often happens -- a scheduling conflict kept me from being able to get the shot that night. And by the following night, Sister Moon had drifted away from her celestial companions too far to get the shot I'd seen the night before. I decided top try it anyway, but the angle I had to use to get all three of them was simply too wide to get anything really exciting.But just so the trip wouldn't be a total wash, I snapped a couple of closeups of the waxing crescent that came out pretty well. And there's certainly one very big shadow going on here. Sometimes it pays to take that extra shot... just in case.

While police were upstairs on 9 negotiating a guy with a gun out of his room, I was on my balcony on 6 getting an eyeful of the last quarter moon over Bogue Sound and Morehead City. I only wish I'd peeked out a little earlier so I could have caught it closer to the horizon. Even so, you can still make out the lights from the Causeway Bridge and the marinas that give scale to the much larger light in the sky.And of course, I couldn't let the moon get away without a closeup.

Sky Watch Friday #1: "First Quarter"

Ever since man first noticed the sky above him the Moon has held him in its thrall. It's been the inspiration for myth, song, and romance from time immemorial. Calendars in some parts of the world are based on lunar cycles. It governs tides, steals hearts and captivates imaginations.
And on this October night, it peeked through the trees into my backyard and invited me to do a little photo shoot with it. And who could resist such a charmer?
