Thematic Photographic 9: "Signs" v.4.0
If memory serves, the sign in the first shot says something like "No Wake Zone" but for me it was simply a filter that allowed me to catch this breathtaking sunset. Yes folks, it really was that dramatic. No Photoshop tricks required here. Now I've heard of "making the best of a bad situation", but the show advertised in the second shot could be called "excessive" by any standard. The first time I saw this sign (on a billboard near Rochester, NY) I was sure I'd read it wrong. so this time when I saw it on the side of a tour bus in Boston, I made sure to get a picture. I really thought I'd have a credibility problem if I didn't have supporting evidence. For those of you who hadn't already figured it out from my profile photo (among other things), I'm a big (read: huge) fan of Hurricanes Hockey. I'm also a Raleigh native still living in Raleigh, which back in the day (c. 1997) used to make me two minorities for the price of one. Amazing what winning a Stanley Cup will do for your popularity.

Tiff ... you're scaring me sweetheart. But you made me look it up 'cause it sounded completely plausible. And turns out the soundtrack is mainly parodies of songs from the 60's and 70's, just not those. The track list (according to Amazon) goes like this:
1. Overture
2. Change, Change, Change
3. I Heard It...
4. Sign of the Times
5. Stayin' Awake/Night Sweatin'
6. My Husband Sleeps Tonight
7. Hot Flash
8. Drippin' and Droppin'
9. I'm Flashing
10. The Great Pretender
11. Sane and Normal Girls/Thank You Doctor
12. Lookin' For Food
13. Please Make Me Over
14. Beauty
15. Puff, My God I'm Draggin'
16. The Work-Out Medley: The Fat Gram Song/My Thighs/Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Body
17. I'm No Babe, Ma
18. Good Vibrations
19. What's Love Got To Do With It
20. Only You
21. New Attitude
22. This Is Your Day!
Mona: I wondered the same thing when I saw it, but this explains it pretty well.
(I'm still scared!)
mojo, Ron Francis spend a few years with the Hurricanes, did he not? I think I have his rookie card hiding somewhere in my closet. reno is over-budget. i may need to sell a bit of the collection.
the sunset photo - A1. I always enjoy spotting a few birds that, unbeknownst to me at the time, were able to find their way into the picture.
cheers,
gord h.
Gord, you are correct sir. Ronnie was originally drafted by the Whalers who became the Hurricanes while Ronnie was in Pittsburgh. Ironically, he scored the game winning goal against Carolina in their first regular season game in Greensboro. He made his return to the Carolina franchise as a free agent beginning with the 1998-99 season and then made a brief appearance with the Leafs as a trade deadline deal the year he retired. His number was retired the same year the team won the cup.
He's now serving as Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Development with the Canes, and makes his home here in Raleigh. He and his wife Maryanne are semi-regulars at the Panera Bread where my oldest son works.
My most vivid memory of the guy didn't happen at the rink. It happened at RDU International Airport right after Game 6 of the 2002 Eastern Conference Final (you might remember that one). The team had just taken a tough six-game series win from Toronto, and as was our custom, there were several hundred fans waiting at the terminal in the dead of night when the team plane landed. (Some estimates reach 3000, but I'm guessing half that.) Despite having just flown from Toronto to Raleigh after playing a brutal game and probably wanting nothing more than ibuprofen and sleep, Ronnie and a handful of others stood in the parking lot of the terminal signing autographs until every single fan that wanted one got one. And did it without even a hint of complaint.
That's just how the guy rolled. Class distilled to its essence.
i think i'll hang onto Ron's rookie card. sounds like a true gentleman.
I think I'll sell Eric Lindros down the river instead.
hopefully, the reno will end soon.
cheers,
gord h.
Oh yeah... definitely sell off the Lemonhead... erm... Lindros (putz).
Check out Ronnie's acceptance speech at his Hall of Fame induction sometime. They've got it on carolinahurricanes.com.
