This series demonstrates what leaving the water running can do over about a gazillion years. I took the third shot looking more or less straight down the gorge, which freaked my then-girlfriend out to an almost comical level.

also, I wasn't bummed, I was mellow in the hammock. That's a mellow face. A fine line between mellow and bummed I guess.

Looks like a quite beautiful place to visit. I like that first shot with the rocks that are all ridged and layered. Nice WW.

Those are great. I've been up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway many times but I don't believe I've ever headed over to Linville Gorge. I may have to remedy that before it gets cold.

@Richard: This particular spot requires a little bit of a hike, but it's worth it. And as I recall it was very cold that day.
The "layering" in the rocks was the product of who knows how many years of running water and sand sawing through the mountain. Which takes a while since the Blue Ridge are basically solid granite covered by a layer of soil.
The third shot wasn't quite as dangerous as it looks like it was, there's a stone wall about waist high at the edge of the gorge. But I was leaned over it pretty far and my then-girlfriend was the nervous type anyway. (Yeah, I did it on purpose just to get a reaction... guilty. And yeah, she probably knew it... she's a smart girl.)
The proximity of both ocean and mountains is probably the reason I'm willing to tolerate the summer climate here (highs are projected to hit triple digits again today). This scene is roughly 4 hours from my front door in one direction, and the beach scenes like this one or this one are even closer than that (less than 3 hours).
(Now if we could just do something about this humidity...)

OK, that's on my list of places to visit. I bet I can get a similar girlfriend reaction without going anywhere NEAR the edge.
Is the last one using a fisheye lens?
@db: Nope. If memory serves, I was using a pretty generic 35-80mm zoom, though it's possible I was using the 75-300mm instead. It's just the combination of angle and the shape of the feature that makes it look like a fisheye.
It's a little bit of a hike to this overlook as I recall, but well worth it. And there's lots to see along the way too.
I love falls and the power of water! Always awe inspiring!
