Thematic Photographic 87: "On The Road" v.4.0 - One Way or Another

Hosted by Written Inc.I had originally planned to use this shot for last week's "Water In Any Form" theme, but then the snow came and handed me a lot of new material. But that's okay, this week works too. I realized after I uploaded it that I got the date wrong. This is actually early 2001 somewhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway (I think). It was one of those places you stop because you need a pit stop of some sort, gas, food, what have you. I'm not even sure it has a name. It wasn't actually a town in the usual sense of the word, just a crossroad with a couple of stores and ... this. I should have paid better attention, because if I ever find my way back there, it'll be an accident.

Thematic Photographic 86: "Water In Any Form" v.2.0 - Rime On The Mountain
When Carmi introduced this theme, a couple of the suggestions he made were ice and fog. Here we have both. Known variously as "hoar frost" or "rime icing" (and probably other things I've never heard) this phenomenon occurs when fog -- or a low flying cloud -- meets a supercooled air mass. The sudden drop in temperature squeezes the moisture out of the wet air, freezing it almost as fast as it precipitates. And it collects rock candy style on everything around. In this case it transformed a few strands of horsehair and a barbed wire fence into art. This is a fairly light deposit, but I've seen photos of rime icing several feet thick and sculpted by high winds into shapes that would rival anything in the Painted Desert. Whatever form it takes, it's an inspiring thing to see. Nature as artist.

Thematic Photographic 79: "Elsewhere" v.3.0 - Able Was I...
Apparently North Elba, is a suburb of Lake Placid, NY because that's where (I thought) we were when I took this. Lake Placid wasn't a scheduled stop on the Great College Road Trip of 2005, but since we were passing so close by, it seemed like some kind of imperative to stop there -- at least for a while. Perhaps only the building bears the name North Elba (can you sell the naming rights to a town hall?) or maybe it's simply that the two towns abut each other so closely that crossing a street takes you from one to the other. (Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC share an intersection like this.) Wherever it is, it's a nice building. and it's definitely "elsewhere". Even when you think you know where you are.

I'll get back to Topsail Island later this week, but today we'll change things up a bit. A little further from home, and in the opposite direction are the Blue Ridge Mountains. This specific piece of said mountains is the "carriage house" at the cone Estate between Boone and Blowing Rock. In my next life perhaps I can be a carriage. 'Cause I could live here.

Monochrome Monday #44: I Should Take The Babooshka Challenge

Somebody threw down the gauntlet -- in a friendly and sporting way -- to our dear Babooshka of Ramsey Daily Photo to shoot a single subject 100 different ways. Babooshka chose the Ramsey Swing Bridge, and as of this writing she's posted 21 or so of the 100 views so far. And probably has several more waiting their turns. I probably could have taken up a similar challenge at Price Lake. Because no matter where you look there's a scene begging to be captured.

Hosted by Written Inc.It seems only fitting to cap off the theme for the week with a sunset. And this was one of the more spectacular ones I've seen in recent years. And folks, I gotta tell ya, that's a pretty high bar to clear 'cause I've seen some real winners. But this one sparked a "Stop the car!" moment on a hairpin turn in a mountain road. It was just that mind blowing. So as the sun sinks slowly in the west, we hear Mojo say, "See ya next theme!"

Thematic Photographic 52: "Dusk" v.6.0
A few days ago, you got to see Rochester, NY from on high, and now we turn further east and head into the Adirondack Mountains somewhere between New York and Massachusetts. No, I don't remember exactly where, but it was south of Lake Placid and Saranac where we'd stopped that afternoon. This was one of those "Stop the car!" moments that happens sometimes. We had just come out of one of the many steep valleys between us and the state line and as we crested the ridge line, this is what we saw. The timing was perfect and my only regret was that I didn't have enough time or film to stay and shoot longer.
