There's a common witticism in North Carolina that if you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes and see what it does next. That might be stretching things just a bit, but as you're about to see, the weather here is a little unpredictable. Below are two shots of the same scene at Price Lake on the Blue Ridge Parkway between Boone and Blowing Rock, NC. Neither of them by itself is especially remarkable, but when you know that the two photos were taken less than 48 hours apart, it gives you an idea of just how fast -- and how drastically -- things can change.

Monday wasn't exactly warm, but pleasant enough that a sweatshirt was sufficient outerwear. Clearly it was pleasant enough for picnicking lakeside.

Sometime between 4:00 and 6:00 am Wednesday morning, though, a frontal boundary pushed a cloud across the top of the mountain leaving behind it six inches of new powder and rime icing on any exposed surface. Temperatures dropped better than 40 degrees in the process, and I returned to one of the places I'd shot two days earlier to document the difference. No picnic weather today!

Item of interest for all you My Worlders. Nicole B has a Photo Scavenger Hunt running thorugh the 15th of March that might be of interest to you. If you participate in That's My World Tuesday, you probably have a number of these already in your archives because the subjects are definitely slanted towards a "local" theme. The hunt ends March 15, so you still have some time to get yours together.

If this sounds interesting, you can find out all the details here: Nicole B's First Photo Scavenger Hunt. So what's on the list? Thought you'd never ask. Here's the list of prompts:

OMG! What a difference! But we've been doing the same thing here -- warm sunshine one day then drop to the 20s! Oh, spring, please hurry!!
Thanks for sharing Mojo! Beautiful shots!

Great representative shots of the weather changes. We've had weird weather, too, but probably not that much change in a short time.

We have the exact same saying here in New England! And the weather did the same thing too - yesterday I got sweaty walking the dog at the park while wearing just a fleece pullover, today it's back to the winter coat and boots with snow/sleet/freezing rain/slush!

What a little snow can do! In five more minutes, were the daffs back up?

sounds a lot like here in the greater roanoke valley in virginia...we had 5 inches of snow a week ago and now the temps are back into the high 70s...go figure.

have a great evening.

Sheba for sure wouldn't mind what the weather would be - that nature would be too interesting and she'd just have to go and discover!

The winter doesn't seems to end yet. In Belgium still cold (5°C) but now snow.

Haha....clever post. Nice photos. Actually, we use that same saying here in Iowa, too. Happy MyWorld traveling!

How fast this could change...they are both beautifully shot though. I love that last one with the white snow. :)

Your weather sounds very British- wait a minute. It definitely has a feeling of spring around the blogs. Love your description of the snow made me laugh and the images cool winter rivers.

Great photos Mojo, and I know what you mean about sudden weather changes, just a few days ago it was +6 degrees Celsius here in Regina, last night it got down to -27, and -37C with the windchill. Yikes!

Have a great week!

That is a really beautiful setting, even with the snow on the banks.

That is a drastic change in weather in two days. Thankfully the temperatures here don't fall to freezing points in my part of he world.

Wow. That makes me crave weather. Here in Southern California we have two kinds of weather: Sunny, and once in a very, very long while, rain.

Makes me miss snow.

And what do the weather men say? They usually say - "Global warming may not be the cause, we need to study trends for moore number of years and seasons before we can know for certain."

We had a 56 degree change in 1 day here last week, so I know how you feel!

So, you didn't want to picnic in the snow? Ah, come on, where's your sense of adventure? By the way, the trees are making an A for you if you are doing that challenge anytime soon. :)

So many places I have lived use that same saying about the weather, especially in March! Last weekend it was 75 degrees - and I just read that we are expecting a couple of inches of snow on Friday night! All of those spring bulb plants are going to be mighty confused by the weekend (if the deer don't eat them first).

weather seems to be on everyone's minds! I guess we are all waiting for the sun!
Thanks for the scavenger hunt tip.

That is so true about NC weather. I did a post like that about Raleigh last week. Good shots for the post.

Ha - nice captures showing the difference! Wish I could have done the same - but nope! Not a chance! The difference where I live is; Is it snowing a lot - or not so much! :)

Have a nice week!

Actually they both are very nice in themselves just as pictures. Both have a special atmosphere of their own. Even nicer it is when you change from one season to another practically over night. That is very much how the spring season goes here in Finland but as of yet it hasn't even started.

Here in CO when we talk about changing weather, our saying is: "Ten minutes or ten miles." I think you'll be posting green pics before me.

Fantastic comparison. Same kind of weather here in Tidewater Virginia.

Amazing.
What a difference a few hours can make.

Question: are you posting pics for the hunt here?
:)
