Thematic Photographic 59: "Elemental" v.5.0 - "Forces of Nature"
Who gets excited when a sky-shredding storm rolls in on his beach trip? Uh, yeah, that'd be me. All the shots in the world of sun and sand and surf -- beautiful as they may be -- cannot replace a shot of Mother Nature unloading on an unsuspecting populace. I got down to the water's edge in time to hike perhaps a half mile down the strand, snapping targets of opportunity, but all the while I was watching the western sky grow more and more menacing. And when the frontal boundary came to (what I estiemated to be the edge) of the mainland (Topsail, like virtually all of North Carolina's beaches is on a barrier island) I reversed direction and headed for the relative safety of the truck. I say "relative safety" because as I watched the storm front advance over the island, I saw what looked to my admittedly uneducated eye like rotation in the clouds. This, anyone can tell you, is not a good sign. But it didn't come to anything -- at least not over land. It did however, dump enough water to nearly make most of Topsail Island resemble Venice (the one in Italy, not the one in California). And to remind me that there's little that's more elemental than Mother Nature when she's being a bitch.

I am in awe of storms at the coast. I bet the eastern side of the country gets some doozies.
I was in Oceanside, OR when we had a hurricane cone through in November of 2007. We were in a stilt house to my horror. I don't think there's anything scarier or cooler. I want more pictures of storms!
Wow!!!!
Yeah... She's can be a bitch sometimes for sure.
But even when she is...
She is completly stunning!!
This is a true HALLELUJAH MOMENT Mojo!
Kram!!
Shit you got me there.... I´ve been at a terribly mood today.
But the mood swings. Look at that light beyond. Just have to wait for it. And maybe say hello when it comes along.

I have read none of the other comments. I prefer it that way.

My breath is held for the next one.
