55 Flash Fiction Friday #63: The Great White Hope

How many nights had he spent in places just like that? How many too-loud, conversations with people he didn't know? How many times had he cheated death after one-too-many empty glasses led to one-too-many empty promises? Reaching instinctively for the ribbed circle of white plastic in his pocket, he shook his head and walked on.

I never heard about using the chips that way but after reading the comments looked it up -- I love that idea (I'm going to borrow it for whenever I pass the refrigerator). Even more I love the imagery of him hanging on to it as walks by and keeps going -- I really liked this little story.

@Susan: I hung onto my white chip for years, carried it everywhere. Because it was the first one, and the one that best reminded me that it can all vanish in the time it takes to swallow. Ultimately, I gave it to someone who needed it worse than I did. Hopefully it got him started on the path.

Had to read and re-read, and like Susan, go and look it up.

Here's to all those starting and staying on the path.

As for mine...
