Thematic Photographic 88: "What I Did On My Vacation" v.3.0 - Dolphin's Playground
A good stretch north of Topsail Island you'll find Ft. Macon on the northern tip of Emerald Isle. The fort itself has been here since the antebellum period and remained an active military installation through the end of the Second World War. Today the swords are beat into plowshares and the former shore battery is now a state park. This system of jetties, that I'm guessing were constructed to keep the adjoining Beaufort Inlet open, provides all manner of photogrpahic opportunity. The jetties were -- if memory serves -- designed by Robert E. Lee (an engineer by training) during his tour at Ft. Macon as a young officer. Lee is also reputed to be responsible for the convection-driven "air conditioning" throughout the main body of the fort. Today, if you're very lucky and have a sharp eye open, you can sometimes see dolphins frolicking in the waters of the inlet, which is just off the left side of htis frame. I've seen them playing there, but never been quick enough to capture them in photographs.

Thematic Photographic 87: "On The Road" v.6.0 - In Case You Forgot
Lest you think that my only coastal destination in the known universe is Topsail Island, I stepped into the Wayback Machine to October 2008 to bring you this shot from Atlantic Beach, an hour or so north of Topsail depending on your route of choice. May I recommend NC 58 for the journey? There are quicker ways, but that one will allow you to traverse the length of Emerald Isle from the southern end which (last time I was there at least) hadn't been quite so over developed as the Atlantic Beach end. And that route will also take you over the rather impressive Bonner Bridge, a high rise feat of engineering of considerable proportion. If you're into that kind of thing.

Thematic Photographic 80: "Abstract" v.2.0 Abstract by Definition
Fireworks are sort of abstract by nature most of the time. Sure, there are the ones that blow up in the shape of the liberty bell or whatever, but your average rocket's red glare is just a bunch of light trails made by glowing embers. And smoke. Lots of smoke. This was probably toward the end of the display at Atlantic Beach's Fourth of July celebration in 2008 and if you don't know for sure what you're looking at you could convince yourself that this was a shot of some distant nebula taken buy the Hubble telescope or some kind of phosphorescent plankton or... It almost seems a shame to find out that it's just your typical bombs bursting in air.

Thematic Photographic 63: "Big" v.3.0 - "Big Schlock"
This is my version of a "fish story". Only in my case, I have evidence to back me up. This chain of beach stores is called "Shark Attack". No I'm not kidding (you can look it up). I'm not sure what it is about a shark attack that the proprietors think will attract customers, but it must do it because there are several of these scattered around the Topsail Island area. Go figure. Personally, I think it represent a little truth in advertising myself, because places like this certainly put a bite on you.

My World Tuesday #44: New Dawn Restaurant, Morehead City
Every town has its "quirky little restaurant that those in the know go to". I'm pretty sure New Dawn is one of those. The decor is pretty much beach-town diner, and you might pass by without even noticing the place. That would be a shame because "quirky" describes the place, but "amazing" describes the food -- and the service. One of the numerous "quirks" about New Dawn is that nothing matches. Not the dinnerware, flatware, coffee mugs, nothing. None of the usual institutional china and flatware for New Dawn. Oh no. We're talking about souvenir coffee mugs and dishes that look like the owners scoured every yard sale in six counties to find it. (Insert funny coffee mug story: I was in Morehead City for the 4th of July in 2008, a need for a late breakfast found me and my companion here. She was a certified Open Water SCUBA instructor and had come to north Carolina from Fairfax, VA. In a strange bit of synchronicity, the mug my coffee was served in bore the logo of a dive shop in Fairfax -- one she'd used frequently when she lived there.) I'm not usually real big on breakfast, but if you find yourself in Morehead, you really should try the waffles here. They're awesome.
