What exactly constitutes "vacation"? Seems to me that the root word would be "vacate". As in "Get the hell outta Dodge". But vacate what? I'm gonna say vacate the workplace for more than a weekend. Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. So this qualifies. And frankly since it wasn't a business trip it should qualify anyway. This trip was my famed pilgrimage to Bethlehem in 2005. Only this Bethlehem is in Pennsylvania. Home of Moravian College, which you see here. Also home to Lehigh University and the gone but not forgotten Bethlehem Steel which has gotten lots of attention in these pages. A very photogenic little burg. You should try it sometime.

Despite being not much more than a co-pilot to a less-than-seasoned driver on this trip, it was an amazingly good one. My son was visiting friends at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA and I was left to my own devices for a weekend with a camera, several rolls of film and one of the most photogenic little burgs imaginable. I'm not exactly sure what the given name for the mountains is in this part of Pennsylvania, but the name I give them is Those Really Steep Ones. There are buildings on the Lehigh campus where ground level at the back is actually on the third floor when you see it from the front. And The Streets of San Francisco have got nothing on the Streets of Bethlehem. I'm not sure what it is about the place that captivates me so, but having spent a weekend getting to know this grand dame, I like her a lot. I need to get back there again. Soon.

I only spent a couple of days in Bethlehem, PA back in November of 2005, but it seemed like everywhere I looked there was another photo opportunity. The one full day I spent in town, I walked -- tripod over my shoulder -- from the business district, across the river and back snapping off shot after shot and on film no less. I often wonder if I were to return now without the limitations inherent in shooting film if the photos I got would be as good, or if there would just be (a lot) more of them to choose from... or both. I'd like to think I've gotten better over the years, but shooting film does require you to be somewhat more selective and somewhat more careful. I think perhaps I'll have to return to Bethlehem and learn the answer to this and other questions.

I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that the term "urban" isn't limited to large -- or even larger -- cities. It certainly seems to apply here in Bethlehem, PA -- at least on this side of the river. It's a lot quieter now since "The Steel" went bust, but you still get that sense of community common in urban neighborhoods.
