Thematic Photographic 73: "Leaves" v.2.0 - Leaves of Spring
"Just Gotta Be Different, Don't I?"
Morrisville, NC - June 2009 (Click to embiggen)
Or was it summer already? Might have been, it was late June. But around here late spring and early summer are virtually indistinguishable from each other. For that matter, early spring and summer. So the leaves here bust out early and stay late like the party guest that doesn't know when to leave. (Get it? "Leave"? Nevermind.) But given the merciless heat of the Carolina summer, that's a good thing. At least you can find some shade... most places anyway.

Thematic Photographic 63: "Summer" - v.7.0 "Rowed Hard and Put Up Wet"
Yeah I know, these are sailboats not rowboats. But they didn't have any rowboats at the rental dock and "sail" didn't fit my idiom. This row of boats is actually a row of Sunfish puddle sailers available for rent at Lake Crabtree. If I knew the first thing about sailing, I might come back and give one of them a try. Since I don't, I'll defer that until I can go out with someone who does. Meanwhile I'll settle for this fantastic sunset to bring down the curtain on thematic Photogrpahic's "Summer" theme. That I know how to do.

Thematic Photographic 63: "Summer" - v.4.0 "Shoot Early, Shoot Often"
I got a lot of mileage out of my brief burst of what my son calls "Jihadist Photography". By this he was referring to my comment that when that magical time of light hits, you just shoot everything in sight whether you would normally think of it as photoworthy or not. This particular evening I lucked into this light at Lake Crabtree. And it really was just lucky. I pulled into a parking area I would probably have passed by more often than not. From there, I walked down a short trail that I would have also ignored -- or simply not seen -- most times. And for my trouble, I stumbled upon this stretch of beach that looked for all the world like it had been transported whole from the Outer Banks. And all this just in time for those magical 15 minutes right before sunset where the light is like honey. I swear it's almost erotic.

Thematic Photographic 57: "Distant" v.4.0
Yeah, okay so Lake Crabtree isn't really big enough for tidal activity. I know it, you know it and the Man in the Moon knows it. But you look at this scene and tell me that song didn't come to mind. Or at least the

Photographically Challenged #1: Who Needs a Meme When You've Got Light Like This?
"Close of Business"
Raleigh, NC - June 2009 (Click to embiggen)
"Quittin' time"

I've been considering this idea for quite some time now. No meme (gasp!), no themes (oohhhh!), just photos that I like. So this is The Great Experiment, submitted for your approval. It's not a meme, but you are of course welcome to join in. No themes, no format, no rules, no buttons, no badges, no bling... completely free-form. I probably won't leave it on Wednesday since Wednesday already has so many "regular" themes going for it already. (I'm thinking maybe Friday could use a boost.) But these shots that I got this past Monday evening simply wouldn't wait. It was one of those times that happens right before sunset when the light turns to pure freakin' magic for maybe 15 or 20 minutes, and I was in the perfect place at just that moment. Sometimes you don't have to chase the light. Sometimes the light comes to you.
