This week Thematic Photographic addresses the issue of hunger. Or food anyway. And for me, that immediately brings to mind firm, meaty bluefin tuna perched atop a ball of sweet rice with some shaved ginger and a dash of wasabi and soy sauce. There's a simplicity in nigiri sushi that's as gratifying as the rich flavors.

Here's a bit of trivia for you that I learned a little while back. The term "sushi" is commonly used by westerners to describe raw fish. But in fact, "sushi" is the name given to the type and preparation of the rice not the fish. Sushi rice is different from the usual long grain rice and is probably closer to the basmati rice of South Asia than anything else. The grains have a pearlescent look to them, and they only take about 10 minutes or so to steam. If I can find the link again, I found a fantastic video on how to prepare your own. Very enlightening, and in fact the source of this tidbit of information.

This week Thematic Photographic explores the "Edible". The mind reels at the possibilities, I tell you. Chances are most of this week we're going to look at a lot of food. But an item needn't be "food" (in the usual sense at least) to be "edible". Technically, all the word means is that you can eat it and it won't make you sick or dead. That applies to a great many things that ... well, I wouldn't consider them food but to each his own I suppose. For instance, I can almost guarantee that there are a number of people who wouldn't touch the sushi delicacies in my opening photo with the proverbial 39 ¹/₂ foot pole. But me? I could have put this away by myself. (I didn't, but I could have.)

Sin #3 on the Seven Deadlies List is my personal favorite, "Gluttony". And in anticipation of this entry, I grabbed the camera one evening recently and took it out for sushi. Lucky for me it turned out the camera wasn't hungry, which left more for me (yaay!). What? No, of course I didn't plan it that way. What are you trying to say?

So because I know you're just dying to know, starting at the bottom we have the old standbys, bluefin tuna and fresh salmon nigiri, then just above that are two variants on the spicy tuna roll: the "crunchy" (left) and the "crazy" (right). Just to the right of that is the spicy yellowtail, being all shy and trying to sneak out of the picture. Next row up is the spider roll -- another staple -- flanked on either side by black peppered tuna (which was nothing short of pure awesomeness on rice!). Total intake, 12 pieces of nigiri and three rolls. The things we do for our art, huh? But it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. After all, there's nothing I wouldn't do for my readers. 'Cause that's just how I roll (Get it? Roll? nevermind...)

This was a place I hadn't tried before, and one that opened relatively recently called Haru Japanese, or simply Haru. A little on the spendy side, but not hideously out of line with the other places around though I have a tip on another place that's supposed to be just as good and not as pricey... I'll get back to you on that one when I find out. Watch this space (No, not this actual space, c'mon. Don't be dense) and meanwhile got check out Kay's place for more sins of the flesh.
