You didn't seriously think I'd let the "Distant" theme go by without offering up an expanse of coastal goodness did you? No, I didn't think so. In this case, it's Wrightsville Beach that drew the lucky straw. I haven't spent as much time there as I have in Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle, but I've never really been sure why not. It's a shorter drive by about 25 miles and easily an hour (because it's a straight shot down Interstate 40 for almost the entire trip as opposed to a limited access, but definitely not Interstate highwway going to the Crystal Coast). I suppose it's because I know the lay of the land better in the Atlantic Beach area. But you can't really go wrong either way.

This shot has a connection to one of my early Thematic Photographic too. It was taken at the same time and place as some that I used for the "Sky " theme in TP 5 about this time last year. And you know what, a year later the scene is no less inspiring than it was then.

Today's angular pursuits come from a little closer to home. My home I mean. Not yours. Unless you happen to live near me that is, in which case, let's do lunch sometime.

The first shot was one of the shots I took while designing a promotional poster for a gallery opening. The woman in the photo is a local musician, and swears she's never done any modeling. But she was completely comfortable in front of the camera regardless and a real pleasure to shoot.

In the second shot is part of the territory guarded by Robo-Hooter, our mechanical friend from a few posts ago. This walkway leads from the rear of the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort down to the "strand" at Wrightsville Beach.

These shots are some more from my conference at Wrightsville Beach in October of 2005. They show two different angles of an interesting apparatus employed by the hotel to help keep the rodents away from the place.

Owls being the natural enemy of mice and other vermin are handy to have around if you have a pest problem. Unfortunately, they're not always the most cooperative of beasts, and tend to do things like fly away to somewhere else. Enter Robo-Hooter (my name for him) seen in the first shot. This guy is a permanent fixture at the Holiday Inn Sunspree in Wrightsville Beach though. He doesn't require feeding, or any other kind of care... and he's on guard 24 hours a day. He's mechanical, and his only purpose is to frighten the small fur-bearing creatures away from his perch.

The bottom two shots show the wires that serve as the "tracks" for our mechanical owl. Don't ask me how the thing works, I just know that when the device is triggered (by whatever triggers it) Robo-Hooter rides on these lines, making owl-like noises and scaring the bejeebus out of any nearby critteroids. They then scamper off to find safer places to pillage. I never actually got to see the contraption in operation, but a few of my colleagues did. According to them, Robo is a fearsome spectacle even for a human, much less a mouse.
