Sky Watch Friday #21: Sun & Tide

"Waning Light"
Atlantic Beach, NC - October 2008 (Click to embiggen)

Sky Watch Friday

The "hazard" of staying in a beachfront hotel is that you wind up with a lot of shots that are very similar in composition, but you just can't help taking them.
On this evening I shot the sun going down from this side of the pier until the disk was obscured by the structure. Then I took off at a dead run (something I almost never do -- ask anyone who knows me!) to the other side to document the last dying gasp of daylight as the sun slipped below the horizon. From where it is in this photo it took roughly 10 minutes for it to disappear completely.
The results were well worth the mad dash down the beach, but I did find myself with a lot of very similar photos and couldn't decide which ones to keep. So I decided I'd keep them all, and throw one out whenever a bit of warmth was called for.Violence Unsilenced

Love the way you have captured the sun itself. Hope you did not burn your eyeballs out.

How'd you get to be first, Mojo?

Your photo is so beautiful! Nothing like a sunset over the water!

Gorgeous capture! I'm with Arija, hope you didn't burn your eyeballs!! Thanks for sharing! Happy SWF!

So, you ran after the last sunray for us Mojo? It's worth the race.
The pier enhances all the scene.

Since you get other shots, you won't have to run again, until next time.

What a beautiful shot! At first glance, that looked just like my "hometown" in Sweden, which has a pier and a beach that looks like it. Thanks for the reminder!

Beautiful sunset! Love how the pier changes from contrast in orange/yellow to blue and green!

Reply to you Mojo;
I'm sorry to say I have no idea what ISO ore anything I used to take those pics! I was so fascinated I didn't think of it! And no - it is not the same as northern light or aurora. It has something to do with ice in the upper atmosphere.....I linked to a little info. - didn't you read that? :) Here is the link:

I think we've all been there; taking what seemed like infinite clicks of the same image :)

This one's very lovely. Enjoy the weekend.

The top most ever shot is a sunset, and yours is fantastic.

Lovely pictures, and the setting sun softens the structures.

I loved the story behind this picture and I can certainly confirm that it was worth the effort. A lovely warm sky and the sun as a gorgeous yellow disc hanging just above the pier. Very eye pleasing composition.

Always difficult to edit your own work but if all your photos are like this, I'm glad you've kept them all. Wonderful!

Great idea keeping sunsets in the hole for a sunny day! These are magnificent. I know what you mean about ending up with a bunch of the same shot, but I promise, each is different, and the sky will never be exactly like that again! Awesome!

ArtistUnplugged said...

Absolutely beautimus!!! You probably even burned a calorie or two on your mad dash for the pic!

This is a wonderful shot, yeah it's true that we sometimes get the same shots, but no matter what, they're always beautiful to watch.

Great shot! What is interesting about the NC beaches in that area is you can look left in the morning and see the sunrise and then look right tosee a sunset like yours.

You arrived to Sky Watch at #1. How DO you do that?? :-)

I know exactly what you mean about the beach-front thing. It happened to me in Nova Scotia and it's irresistible.

Happy week-end.
