55 flash fiction friday #68: the whole truth

"People will tell you what they want you to know."

"True. But it’s not always the whole truth. They’ll tell you as much as they can."

"Meaning?"

"Some things... you can’t say."

"Because?"

"Maybe you’re afraid of the reaction. Or afraid it’ll hurt someone."

"Like what?"

"I can’t say."

"Because?"

"I’m afraid of both things."

People tell you what they want you to know. And often so much less.

Telling your story makes it part of the listener's, too. It's always complicated.

...and yet, somehow, this strikes me as the most compelling argument I've ever heard- for unsilencing.

(Yes, I know they didn't invent it, but that's how I always hear it... with a 12-sting acoustic.)

Love it! Sounds like me, watching what I say in case I cause either of those outcomes. And then on other occasions, I wish I had said nothing. Though of course, people don't always tell the truth anyway.

The truth always comes out. Always. It's just not always timely.

So true. I wonder how many of us really can handle the whole truth?!

Great shot -- it goes well with the evasive dialogue.

I loved the photo! Very expressive.
And as far as the truth goes... The way I see it there are many different truths. We may tell people we want them to tell us the truth, but the truth we really want to hear is our own. Or?
Thoughtprovoking 55. Loved it.

Mojo,
Hello. You were first (and that can't be easy) so I thought I'd visit you first. I love your blog, by the way. And your 55? Steller! I love the photo...all those empty chairs. Somehow we lose our ability to be honest around the age of six.

Morning, Mojo, nice dialogue going on here, inside your 55 and in your comments. I personally reserve the whole truth about me for my husband and my therapist...the two safest places on earth. My 55 is Here
