Your Honor, I Object!

"Click To Object"

As I tried to digest the unfathomable ruling of the US Supreme Court in Citizens United v. FEC I wondered if Abraham Lincoln would recognize his party today. Sorry Mr. President, but government: of the people, by the people, for the people, has perished from the earth. It was sold to the highest bidder last week by the firm of Roberts, Alito & Scalia. If Gettysburg was a new birth of freedom, Citizens United was its death. In one stroke the high court overturned a century of standing law. The GOP couldn't win the popular vote in the last two elections, so the high court pimped out the next one -- and many more to follow -- not only to the monolithic corporations on Wall Street, but foreign and multinational interests as well. (I somehow think that this isn't what the economists have in mind when they speak of "globalization".) They've set us up for years' worth of choices between the best candidates money can buy on both sides of the aisle. The Golden Rule has been rewritten to read "He who has the gold makes the rules".

It would be bad enough if the Congress had passed such a law. It would take a Herculean effort, but such a law could be repealed, and its authors and proponents replaced in coming elections. But a Supreme Court ruling? Only another Supreme Court ruling can overturn that. Still, despite a reprehensible decision by the Bushisti on the bench, there are a few ways to limit the damage. Because (for the time being at least) Congress still holds the power to amend the Constitution. And there are a half dozen or so House Resolutions already under consideration that could offer some damage control. The image above is linked to a thumbnail of the more prominent ones. I won't say I think all of them are feasible, or even advisable. But do you want to live in a country where the three branches of government are Microsoft, Coca-Cola and Exxon/Mobil?

Think about it.

The Spiffy Report: Happy (belated) Anniversary!

"Sorry guys, I'm just a bit distracted lately."

January 3, 2009
The wedding came off with a hitch, which was part of the plan. The Tiny House was stuffed to the gizzard with friends and family, most of whom drove over an hour to be here. I’m extremely grateful to the folks who came to celebrate with us! Bloggers you know were here as well, notably Kenju (and Mr. Kenju), Renn, Mojo, and Tiff, who played the part of Bride.
"Saturday was a pretty darned good day.

There were snacks
And flowers
And friends and family
And a minister
And a bride and groom

There was the mention of death's bony finger*, words of love, an exchange of rings, and a kiss. No, TWO kisses. BONUS!"

Those of you who know me best know this: I don't shoot weddings. I just don't. It's not my thing for a lot of reasons and there are people (who are much better at it than I) who will be thrilled beyond reason to do the job for you. But it's not for me. But in the last (counting on fingers) eight years there have been exactly two exceptions that prove the rule. The first of these involved people you never heard of (though a couple of their photos did sneak onto my blog). the second case, however, was the social event of the season for Western Wake Forest, the Spiffy Wedding wherein Tiff and Biff pledged their undying love and devotion one to the other in the presence of witnesses and one tres cool minister who could even pull off Death's bony finger with aplomb. (Don't ask.)

What's disturbing is that I was at this wedding, and even provided the twenty-seven 8 x 10 color glossy photographs with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was should they ever need evidence that these nuptials actually took place. And despite all that...

The anniversary of this blessed event completely slipped by doddering old man's mind until just a while ago when Tiff left a comment on ... one of today's other posts. (I forget which one)

Guys, I can only chalk it up advancing age and recent distraction. But I hope the new waffle iron is kicking some blueberry butt and taking names.

Happy (belated) Anniversary!

*Specifically, there was mention of pulling Death's bony finger.

Happy Hannukah

My humblest apologies for my tardiness in getting this together. I could explain, but it'd only be an excuse which has a maximium effective range of just about zero, so I won't.

Today marks the beginning of a sacred and special season for those of the Jewish faith, and I have many friends both in and out of the Blogosphere who will for the next eight (it is eight, right?) days be observing Hannukah. They could tell you the story far better than I ever could, and I hope you'll visit them and learn how one night's worth of lamp oil for no explicable reason kept the lamp lit for eight days and nights. (That's the way-oversimplified Goyim version of the story.)

And to those of you who are celebrating, the only Hebrew word I know that might be applied here would be Shalom. Which if I'm not mistaken, translates literally as "Peace" (feel free to correct me, I promise not to be offended). I hope that's what it means anyway, because that's my wish for you this -- and all -- seasons. Happy Hannukah, my friends.
