Thematic Photographic 69 "Transition" v.3.0 - Gone in 15 Seconds
"No Appointment Necessary"
Rockingham, NC - November 2001 (Click to embiggen)
Note: Please take a moment to stop by the Written, Inc. and visit this post. And pay your respects to TP's creator, Carmi, on the sudden loss of his father. Best thoughts for you and your family Carmi.
Whether you follow the sport or not, there's something mesmerizing about watching a pit crew at work. In less than 15 seconds they can take a race car through the transition form evil handling pig to finely tuned competitor. In under a quarter of the time it will probably take you to read this, four tires come off, four more go on, a full tank of fuel will be dispensed, suspension will be adjusted and they'll even clean your windshield. Which is why they say that races are won and lost not on the track, but in the pits.Your Turn: Got a photo to support the "Transition" theme? Feel free to share a link in the comments. If you're new to Thematic Photographic or just wondering how this works, you can find out all about it here or better yet, here at TP's usual home. Tune in tomorrow for another installment in the Transition theme. Until then, peace yo!

My World Tuesday #46: The Rock
Ask any hockey fan and they'll tell you that the Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy in professional sports. I"m as big a fan of the sport as anyone -- bigger than most -- but I challenge this assertion on the grounds that the America's Cup predates the Stanley Cup by a good 50 years or more. But neither of those has the age on them that this trophy does. The Rock at North Carolina Speedway hasn't been a trophy for 65 million years, but the rock that makes it up has probably been around that long. It takes a long time to form granite. Every driver in the Series Formerly Known as The Winston Cup that wins a race here has his name carved into the face of the stone for the archaeologists to dig up in 500 years. (Click the wide shot for a closeup.) Imagine being on a dig in the year 2509 and unearthing this stone with these names etched into it. Surely these must be the names of great leaders, right? MmmmNo. Just the leaders at the checkered flag.

Thematic Photographic 52: "Dusk" v.3.0
This was one of those shots you just chalk up to serendipity. Back in November of 2001, I went with the woman I was then dating to a couple of stock car races. This one was run at the NC Speedway in Rockingham -- "The Rock". The race was over and we were returning to the car, and as we passed the grandstand I caught this incredible silhouette. This was the first of two shots I took of it, a few minutes apart and it's still one of my favorites from that day. The serendipity comes from the fact that I still had film left at the end of the race to capture it with.
