Ruby Tuesday #54: "As Old As I Am, And Even Redder"

Ruby Tuesday - Are you red-dy? Hosted at

I somehow managed to completely space off Ruby Tuesday this week until just this minute when someone else's R/T post turned up in my reader. I'm really becoming less of a fan of this egtting old bit all the time. But never fear, even redder than my face is this 1960 MGA I shot at a car show a few months back.

My World Tuesday #46: The Rock

"The Oldest Trophy"
Rockingham, NC - November 2001 (Click for detail view)

Be a virtual tour guide on That's My World Tuesday

Ask any hockey fan and they'll tell you that the Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy in professional sports. I"m as big a fan of the sport as anyone -- bigger than most -- but I challenge this assertion on the grounds that the America's Cup predates the Stanley Cup by a good 50 years or more. But neither of those has the age on them that this trophy does. The Rock at North Carolina Speedway hasn't been a trophy for 65 million years, but the rock that makes it up has probably been around that long. It takes a long time to form granite. Every driver in the Series Formerly Known as The Winston Cup that wins a race here has his name carved into the face of the stone for the archaeologists to dig up in 500 years. (Click the wide shot for a closeup.) Imagine being on a dig in the year 2509 and unearthing this stone with these names etched into it. Surely these must be the names of great leaders, right? MmmmNo. Just the leaders at the checkered flag.

You want a big wingspan, try 185 feet. With wingtips that will rise 19 feet relative to their position at rest when the aircraft is in flight. Wings that can carry 70,000 pounds of Bad Day.

Big. Trouble.

Her wingspan isn't quite as big as Helga's, but it's a lot more recognizable, even to those not enamored of things automotive. This lady has been gracing the noses of Rolls Royces of all shapes and sizes for as long as anyone can remember. You want to talk about big, these monuments to excess have been accessible only to those who are "rolling in it" (pun intended) since their beginning.

This is Helga, an extraordinarily large female red-tailed hawk. I know her name, and that's she's extraordinarily large because I was there when she was released back into the wild after being treated for a badly broken wing at the Raptor Center in Charlotte. Apparently they had to use the largest ID band they had for hawks to tag her. You don't get the sense of scale here that you would if you'd seen her in the flesh... er... feathers, but her wingspan was roughly 4 feet (about 1.3 meters for those of you in most of the world). One very big bird, and, for me, one very big thrill to see this happen.
