Thematic Photographic 84: "White" v.7.0 - What's a Week Without a Vintage MG?
In the process of researching the MG for another post a while back, I learned something I'd never known before. "MG" stands for "Morris Garage", which is apparently the shop where the first of these autos were built. Morris also built the original Mini Cooper, and Mini Minor before merging with Austin, which was also in bed with Healy which was also in bed with Jensen. It's no wonder these old British cars were as flalky as they were considering the inbreeding that must have resulted form all that sleeping everybody was doing with everybody else. The whole of British Leyland seems pretty incestuous to me. But reliability issues aside, these old MG's, along with their cousins at Atusin-Morris-Jensen-Healy and Triumph were immesnely popular with my generation and the one before it. (Ask either of my sons and they probably wouldn't recognize an MG at a glance.) this is probably because these were sports cars that regular people could actually afford to buy. Then. I shudder to think of the price this MG TD would fetch today.

Thematic Photographic 84: "White" v.4.0 - Rule Brittania
Usually I associate British sports cars with British Racing Green, but at the May 2009 show for the local car club for vintage British autos that legendary color was actually rather scarce. Red seemed to be the predominant color, but white was well represented as well. This is essentially the hardtop version of the venerable Triumph TR-6 and the counterpart to the MGB-GT from the MG stable. It's essentially the same car other than it's non-moveable top, with the same inline six and rolling stock. You don't see so many of them though. In fact, unless I missed one (very possible) this was the only example of this model at the show.

Hosted by Written Inc.My son the music major returned home in the Spring semester of his junior year, leaving the remote and frozen environs of Potsdam, NY and the Crane School of Music for the closer-to-home University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In April he played his first recital at UNC-G followed shortly by his first gig with the school's Symphonic Band. This shot was from the former event obviously.And about the same time he returned from the North Country, the Hurricanes returned to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since winning The Cup in 2006. After knocking off two of the top three seeds in the East in dramatic fashion (a pair of Game 7 wins, one on a buzzer beater and the other in overtime) Carolina ran into the juggernaut that was Pittsburgh, the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup. But until The Penguins marched into town, the middle-of-the-night welcome home parties at RDU International were in full swing each time the team returned home from the road.And two days after Scott Walker banged a rebound past Tim Thomas to chase the top-seeded Boston Bruins from the playoffs, I was listening to the radio re-broadcast while on a photo tour with the Tonka Unit. Stop number one on the tour was the Antique British Car Show hosted by North Hills... what do they call it now that the mall isn't there anymore? Anyway, I question the antiquity of some of the cars on hand (somehow a 2006 Lotus doesn't seem like it would qualify) but while pondering if I had ever had occasion to use the plural of "Lotus" (I don't think I have) I caught this collection of 60s vintage MG A's.

Hosted by Written Inc.Between editing the photos from a shoot I did yesterday for InterAct of Wake County and trying to get the last editing done on my BlogBlast for Peace post I sort of forgot that I didn't have Thematic v. 74.2 done yet. Fortunately, the car show I attended last May had a host of bright red vintage British sports cars including this Austin Healy 3000. Not that it really needed it, but it appeared that one owner or another of this particular specimen had made a few alterations to the original along the way. The most apparent changes were the fender flares that covered the wider-than-stock tires. Not being fluent in Austin Healy engine compartments, I couldn't tell if there had been mods to the power plant (though the air induction system didn't look stock), but the top and interior appeared to be aftermarket/custom as well. I've always been torn when it comes to customizing a car like this. There just seems something inherently wrong about it. But there's no question that this was still a pristine automobile. And no question about its redness either.

Thematic Photographic 71: "Open" v.7.0 - Open Wheel
Okay, technically this 1964 Lotus Super Seven isn't an "open wheel car" since it actually does have fenders. But it's probably as close as you'll find to a true open wheel roadster among street legal automobiles. This shot came from what was billed as a "British Antique Car Show" back in May of 2009. I say "billed as" because there were a number of cars there that even a generous definition wouldn't classify as "antique", including the much younger sibling of this car -- a 2000 Lotus Seven. And frankly, I'm not sure how I feel about the term "antique" being used to describe a car built when I was four years old. But it's a photogenic little ride, whatever you call it.
