I'm not even going to attempt a guess at what these steering wheels came off of. I'll assume it was some kind of farm machinery, but being agriculturally impaired that's about as far as I can go. But as I've said before, rusty junk makes good photographs.

Now this I recognize (you might too, I've featured it here before). This is a 70's-vintage Toyota Land Cruiser (or it used to be anyway). The Land Cruiser was the forerunner of the newer FJ Cruiser, and to a degree I suppose it was the forbear of the 4-Runner compact SUV of not so long ago. (Are those still in production? You don't hear about them anymore.) This particular Land Cruiser apparently had a career as a surf fisherman's steed, judging from the rod rack on the front bumper. Judging from the copious amount of rust on its sheet metal, I'd further guess that it had a long and illustrious career in that capacity.

...but if I had to guess I'd say this is the end of whatever it used to be that was attached to a tractor so it could be pulled around to do whatever it did. It wasn't doing much more than rusting when I found it. And posing for a photo of course.

So it was like this. I'm at this dog trial last December with a good friend of mine who's competing with her dog Mojo (no relation. But you might remember him from this week's Wordless Wednesday - Tuesday Edition.) And since she's not due to start for an hour, I need to find some way to fill the time on this frosty December morning. Lucky for me, the trial was being held at a sod farm that came complete with its own junkyard full of... junk. Mostly broken down farm equipemnt that I assume was being cannibalized for parts, but some stuff that... well I'm not sure what you'd do with it. Like this tire for example. Unless I miss my guess, this is a US Government Issue cross country truck tire, no doubt blown out at the nearby Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base. I saw plenty of these in the Army, so I'm pretty sure I can recognize one at a glance. At one time it probably served its country carrying marines from point to point. Now... its only discernible purpose is to make me wonder how it came to be here. And of course, to snap a photograph of it.

As photographs go, these aren't two of my better efforts. But they are in keeping with the theme of this week's Thematic Photographic (Signs), and they're certainly hilarious. It's even funnier when you realize that these two businesses are (or were at least) directly across the highway from each other. I caught these from the car on the way to Beaufort in November of 2000.
