But of course, I can't ignore the fact that we did in fact get a little snow this year too. Nothing like The Great Blizzard of course, but enough to cover things up. Tonka didn't seem to care one way or the other about the snow which I found a little unusual. But all the same I didn't make him stay outside. This shot's interesting because his doghouse is actually under a larger shelter that usually will keep the weather off of it. But when it's snowing sideways...Violence Unsilenced

Kaylia over at invented a sort of neat idea that (for lack of a better name) I'll call a Mini-Meme (clever huh?) based on the Seven Deadly Sins. And this week's "Sin of the Week" is Lust. Now bein' as I'm not all that keen on getting slapped, I thought it best to take a bit of an abstract approach to this one, so I submit for your consideration this work I call "Blinded By Lust".

You might remember a few weeks ago when the Thursday Challenge was "Experimental" that I featured a radically overexposed random butt shot taken at a hockey game back in 2007. Well I don't know if the young lady in this photo belongs to that butt or not, but I do know that the two shots were taken at the same time. And I suppose you could make the argument that this is what I deserve for taking covert photos of random women at hockey games. But hey, it's art. Get over it.Violence Unsilenced

One more from The Great Blizzard of 2000 just because... well, it's the best example of winter we've ever had here. At this point I think were were already sitting at 17 inches, and no signs of stopping. Which I most certainly had to document because it's not likely to ever happen again.Violence Unsilenced

I can actually remember -- in my lifetime -- a day when doors like this weren't hung in a museum, but in businesses in my hometown. A lot of bloggers, a lot of people in general actually, are thankfully too young to have ever seen this kind of intolerance in anything but a history book. Thankfully, these doors are now a curiosity in the Raleigh City Museum and serve not to divide people, but to teach the lessons of history so that future generations will never have to repeat them.

Seeing this exhibit which I shot in the late summer of 2007 only serves to underscore the historic significance of last November's election. In forty years, the city that once relegated African Americans to the back of the bus, or their own "separate but equal" drinking fountains and restrooms voted in support of just such a man to occupy the nation's highest office. The election didn't bring an end to bigotry, but it did mark a point of progress in that pursuit.

Some stories are the same in any language.
She turned eastward, determined her eyes would never again fall on this festering dung heap. As she passed the edge of the village, her sari grazed the ground, picking up a last trace of dust*. When night fell and she had put miles behind her, she scrubbed herself raw and reduced the sari to ash.
*Nod to Tiff... thanks for the visual babe.

Sky Watch Friday

The "hazard" of staying in a beachfront hotel is that you wind up with a lot of shots that are very similar in composition, but you just can't help taking them.
On this evening I shot the sun going down from this side of the pier until the disk was obscured by the structure. Then I took off at a dead run (something I almost never do -- ask anyone who knows me!) to the other side to document the last dying gasp of daylight as the sun slipped below the horizon. From where it is in this photo it took roughly 10 minutes for it to disappear completely.
The results were well worth the mad dash down the beach, but I did find myself with a lot of very similar photos and couldn't decide which ones to keep. So I decided I'd keep them all, and throw one out whenever a bit of warmth was called for.Violence Unsilenced

Usually if we want snow we have to make our own. Even in the mountains the natural snow isn't enough to build enough of a base for the ski areas to operate without help. This is a typical scene between shifts at Appalachian Ski Mountain when they close the slope for an hour or so to re-groom the surface. On sunny days, it's not unusual for the surface to thaw enough to turn the ski slope into a skating rink for the night skiing session.Violence Unsilenced

I like to joke that we get snow here in election years. And in 2000 we sort of had an election, but we definitely got snow. Several years' worth overnight. Now to a lot of you 22 inches of snow is trivial. But it was a record for Raleigh. And predictably the city was pretty well paralyzed. Snow removal? We don't do that here.Violence Unsilenced

I need a program. But I got invited to play along on this new meme, and you know how hard it is for me to pass one of those up. The idea behind this one is there are two themes posted each week that are polar opposites. Catch them both in one shot and it's a bonus, but two will do the job (think of it as Heads and Tails). You can find out all about it at the host site. We'll see how it goes. On to the photo!

For the first week, the rulers of Tuesdayville let everyone choose their own pair of themes. After poking around in the archives for a few minutes, I settled on "Old & New" when I spotted this shot.

Captured in the hubcap of the spare wheel of this (old) 1942 Ford delivery van is the reflection of my (new...er) 2002 Dodge pickup. Old and new...

PS: The Ford was wicked... expect to see more of that truck on these pages in the future.

A door needn't be grand to be interesting, as these low-rent flats on Hillsboro Street demonstrate. These buildings are a few blocks from the campus of NC State University and are no doubt inhabited mainly by future engineers and computer scientists, mathematicians and veterinarians. And not a few parties of mythic proportion on a weekend evening I'm sure.Violence Unsilenced
